Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher confirmed dead in murder-suicide

After rumors had swirled over the last few minutes about the identity of the Kansas City Chiefs player involved in a murder-suicide early Saturday morning, police have confirmed that linebacker Jovan Belcher took the life of his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself at Arrowhead Stadium.

Saturday morning has been abuzz with news of a shooting at Arrowhead Stadium and details have bene slowly leaking out about the incident. The team finally released a statement earlier that read, "We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

It is unclear at this time whether or not the scheduled Sunday game between the visiting Carolina Panthers and the Chiefs will be played or not. Word should come later today from the NFL commissioner's office. As of now, the Panthers interim general manager Brandon Beane advised the team to go ahead and travel to Kansas City.

Belcher was an undrafted free agent signed by the Chiefs in 2009. The 25-year-old linebacker out of Maine earned a starting spot in his rookie season and had 44 total starts for the Chiefs in the last four seasons.
