Deemed expendable by the Redskins despite leading the team in all major receiving categories in 2011, Washington was unable to find any trade suitors for Gaffney's services leading up to and during the NFL draft, leading to his release just yesterday. The 10-year veteran has quickly found a landing spot with a familiar franchise.
From 2006 through 2008, Gaffney appeared in 43 games for the Patriots, totaling 85 catches and 1,059 reception yards, including a career-high five touchdowns in 2007.
With the offseason signings of Brandon Lloyd and Donte Stallworth adding to an already deep receiving corps, it's likely that nothing is guaranteed for Gaffney entering next season.
But to latch on with a winning franchise -- a franchise that currently employs Josh McDaniels, a coach with whom Gaffney has built a strong relationship with during his career -- must be relieving for the veteran receiver.
