Jets GM Rumors: Tom Telesco delays interview after Chargers show interest

Telesco is a finalist for San Diego's general manager vacancy.

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets are interested in interviewing Tom Telesco for their open general manager position, but Telesco pushed back the interview as he is close to landing the same job for the San Diego Chargers, according to the NFL Network's Albert Breer.

Telesco had a second interview with the Chargers in San Diego on Tuesday, according to a source apprised of his schedule. The Jets put in a request this week to interview Telesco for their open GM position, scrambling after losing candidate Atlanta Falcons director of player personnel David Caldwell to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday, and the Colts granted them permission. But with talks getting more serious with San Diego, Telesco pushed back that interview.

Telesco is the director of player personnel for the Indianapolis Colts.

The Jets are looking to replace former general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who was fired Dec. 31. Tannenbaum was the team's general manager since 2006.

The Chargers are reportedly down to two candidates to fill their general manager position. One is Telesco, while the other is their own director of player personnel, Jimmy Raye.

The Jets are looking to rebuild after going 6-10 this year and finishing last in the AFC East. The Jets went to the AFC Championship in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010, but the team hasn't returned to the playoffs since.

The Jets were outscored by 94 points this year, which was the worst mark during Tannenbaum's tenure.
