The Minnesota Vikings have named quarterback Matt Cassel as their starter in Week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens, according to what Cassel told the Pioneer Press on Wednesday. Head coach Leslie Frazier only told the media that Cassel "likely" would start, with Christian Ponder not yet cleared to play following a concussion suffered in Week 13 against the Chicago Bears.
Cassel came into that game in relief of Ponder and was 22 of 33 for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception, as the Vikings pulled off a 23-20 upset in overtime.
Minnesota is 1-1 in games started by Cassel, compared to 2-6-1 in games started by Ponder, but one of those wins is technically the game against Chicago where Cassel played the majority of the time. The Vikings have flip-flopped between those two, plus Josh Freeman. Signed in the middle of the season after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Freeman is 0-1 as a starter with Minnesota.
He will likely be the backup on Sunday against Baltimore.
