Rob Chudzinski still not committed to Brandon Weeden

With Jason Campbell also in the mix, Weeden will have to earn the starting job.

Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski isn't going to rush to decide who will start at quarterback this fall.

Discussing the improvement of second-year quarterback Brandon Weeden this offseason in an interview with Cleveland radio station 92.3 The Fan (via CBS Cleveland) on Thursday, Chudzinski said "it's too early" to say definitively that Weeden will be the Browns starter when they line up in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins.

Chudzinski did say that Weeden is working with the first team right now. Signing quarterback Jason Campbell this offseason to a two-year deal, though, was not done simply to inflict a little pressure on Weeden's continued development. If Campbell earns the job, as Chudzinski says in the interview with 92.3 The Fan, it'll be his:

"I expect both of these guys to compete. I don't know any other way. Anybody that's on a team is competing from my standpoint. We want to put these guys in a situation, give them every chance to succeed and we'll see how that all plays out. I'm hoping that the best man wins the job and that he gives us a chance to win."

Playing in 15 games during his rookie campaign, Weeden completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 3,385 yards, 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. The Browns lost their first five games of the 2012 season but split their final six, and Weeden was under center during Cleveland's three-game winning streak that stretched from late November to early December.

Appearing in six games for the Chicago Bears as a replacement for Jay Cutler in 2012, Campbell threw for 265 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He connected on 62.7 percent of his throws.

Next week, as CBS Cleveland notes, the Browns start their offseason organized team activities.
