Mike Goodson in plea talks for gun, marijuana charges, per report

The Jets recent signee appeared in court on Wednesday and, although there's still a chance he and his associate could go to trial, a plea deal is apparently in talks.

New York Jets running back Mike Goodson is in plea talks for gun and marijuana charges stemming from a May 17 incident that saw him and an associate arrested.

Plea offers have not been extended to either Goodson -- who signed with the Jets this offseason after three seasons with Carolina and one with Oakland -- or Garant Evans, according to a report from USA Today, but a Morris County assistant prosecutor said talks are underway in that regard following Wednesday's early disposition conference.

The charges filed against the two men will be presented to a grand jury for possible indictment if a plea deal can't get worked out and would likely lead to a trial. It would seem that a plea agreement is more likely, however.

The biggest hurdle currently seems to be the gun charge, as a search of the vehicle during the arrest turned up a loaded 45-caliber Taurus Millennium, according to an affidavit, that neither man initially admitted owning. One of Goodson's lawyers told USA Today that Evans has since claimed ownership of the weapon.

The marijuana charges would be misdemeanors while the charge on the gun could lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years if a plea deal doesn't happen.
