New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan ruled out Mark Sanchez for Week 4 of the preseason against the Philadelphia Eagles. Speaking at a press conference Monday, Ryan confirmed that Sanchez isn't practicing this week, calling the quarterback "day-to-day" with the shoulder injury he suffered Saturday night against the New York Giants.
Ryan didn't shed much light on the quarterback competition. He maintained his hard stance that the team will make a determination on a starter "when we're ready." Ryan didn't tip his hand either way, saying that offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's offense will not change depending on who is playing quarterback.
Ryan also briefly addressed the controversy surrounding his decision to let Sanchez play into the fourth quarter of Saturday's game.
"Do I regret that he got injured? Of course," Ryan said. "But I'm not going to say anything more about it because I think I've covered it."
Geno Smith is expected to start for the Jets on Thursday. The rookie quarterback threw three interceptions and ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety in a rocky performance against the Giants.
