San Francisco began trimming down its roster Monday, parting ways with backup quarterback Scott Tolzien among others.
Needy general managers around the league will be casting their eyes to the NFC West to see who falls through the cracks in Seattle and San Francisco. Depth on both the Seahawks and 49ers' rosters is believed to be such that valuable upgrades can be found from both team's cuts.
Tolzien was the only tenured member of the 49ers cut Monday. He joined the team in 2011, and failed to take a regular season snap in his two seasons. Tolzien's preseason career in San Francisco was mostly a series of failed opportunities. He had the chance to compete for the backup spot behind Colin Kaepernick this year but was beaten out by Colt McCoy, who was acquired by San Francisco for two late-round draft picks before April's draft.
Here's a full list of the players cut by the 49ers on Monday:
- RB D.J. Harper
- LB Joe Holland
- OG Al Netter
- P Colton Schmidt
- QB Scott Tolzien
