The defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens will kick off their preseason with a trip to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday evening. The Ravens had a hectic offseason, losing key players to retirement, free agency and injuries. Returning are running back Ray Rice and quarterback Joe Flacco, who was minted with a hefty contract in March.
The Buccaneers are looking to put the sting of a 7-9 season behind them. Lucky for them, they arguably made themselves stronger in the offseason. In particular, a much maligned secondary should be several notches better with the additions of Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson. Fans may be able to catch a glimpse of Goldson on Thursday, though Revis is still on the mend.
Both teams have a lot to prove this season. The Buccaneers are trying to get over the hump that lies in the way of making the playoffs. The Ravens are hoping that signing Flacco to a rich contract in lieu of retaining key offensive and defensive players will work out in their favor. We should have a slightly better idea where both teams stand after Thursday.
