Following the leak of a graphic video depicting Ray Rice knocking his then-fiancee Janay Palmer unconscious in a casino elevator, the running back was released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL on Monday.
Rice broke his silence on Tuesday in a text message to Rachel Nichols of CNN:
Texted with Ray Rice. He told me: "I'm just holding strong for my wife and kid, that's all I can do right now."— Rachel Nichols (@Rachel__Nichols) September 9, 2014
Rice was already serving a two-game suspension before TMZ released a security video of Rice punching his current wife as she stepped toward him during an argument in February.
Rice previously apologized for the incident, saying he "failed miserably" during a May press conference.
"I want you to know I'm still the Ray Rice that you know, or used to know, or grown to love," Rice said. "I'm still the same guy. As me and Janay wish we could take back 30 seconds of our life, we definitely sit here and tell you that we are better parents, we are better lovers and also better friends."
