No North American sporting event garners more attention than the Super Bowl. Accordingly, more money is wagered on it than any other annual event domestically. And betting isn't just for the shadowy figures who lurk in Las Vegas sportsbooks. Casual fans of all varieties throw money down on the game to add a little extra excitement. Fans can wager on everything from the outcome of the coin flip to the color of the Gatorade bath at the end of the game. These are known as proposition bets, or props.
A popular prop is the length of time it takes to complete the national anthem. This year, Idina Menzel of Frozen fame has been tasked with performing the song. She previously sung the national anthem at the 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game (a rendition that lasted over two minutes). Betters can choose whether to wager on her performance lasting over two minutes and one second or under. You can also bet on whether she flubs at least one word of the song.
For the more mature crowd, sportsbooks are offering odds on whether Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch grabs his crotch after scoring a touchdown. Lynch infamously contacted his nether regions after scores during this year's NFC Championship and several other games during the season. Be careful, though. If Lynch doesn't score a bet of "Yes" will not be refunded.
Another fun prop focuses on the fashion choices of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, well known as a connoisseur of the hooded sweatshirt. Betters can put money on the color of the hoodie Belichick is wearing at kickoff. Grey is the odds-on favorite at -120 with blue and red paying out great sums. Fans can also bet on whether the sleeves of his hoodie are cut off. If you want even more Belichick action, sportsbooks are offering odds on whether he smiles on camera during the television broadcast.
For the more football-centric better, Vegas offers any number of individual performance props. Fans can wager on which player wins the Super Bowl MVP award. As is often the case, the quarterbacks lead the field with Tom Brady receiving 9-to-5 odds and Russell Wilson coming in at 7-to-2. You can also bet on which player scores the game's first touchdown. While the superstars have the shortest odds, be sure to consider lesser renowned players such as Seattle tight end Luke Wilson (16-to-1 odds) and the Patriots' Timothy Wright (20-to-1).
You can even wager on whether a certain player scores two or more touchdowns during the game. Lynch is the odds-on favorite at 3-to-1 with New England tight end Rob Gronkowski following close behind at 9-to-2.
