2015 NFL Combine: Offensive line bench press results

The big boys got on the bench Thursday to show off how much the weight room sessions paid off throughout college.

Most positions at the NFL Scouting Combine see the majority of players take part in the bench press on their third day in Indianapolis, but how much the results actually matter for each position is up for debate. It's always interesting to see which kicker can put up the most reps of 225 pounds, if any, and find out which receiver or quarterback stands out among the rest at his position.

But strength matters more for a couple of positions, and none more so than the offensive line. Most of any offensive lineman's job is to get in the way of some other big thing and move that big thing out of the way so a smaller thing can get by it or be protected from it. The bench press isn't a definitive measurement of how an offensive lineman will perform at his job -- lower body strength is particularly important -- but it's definitely valuable information for scouts.

On Thursday, the top offensive linemen from around the nation took part in the bench press and we've got the results. Ereck Flowers from Miami led the way with an impressive 37 reps, with Mitch Morse of Missouri and Sean Hickey of Syracuse just behind him at 36 and 35 reps, respectively. The most reps for an offensive lineman last year was 42 by Russell Bodine.

Brandon Scherff, who many feel is the best offensive lineman in this draft, came in at 23 reps. That's significantly lower than the top, of course, but it's about average looking at the numbers as a whole. There's more to it than just strength, of course, and Scherff is one of the most talented players coming out this year. He's also capable of lifting 480 pounds total, which is ridiculously impressive, especially for a former high school quarterback.
