Nick Foles will start at quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 9. He’ll take Alex Smith’s spot in the lineup after the veteran passer left last week’s game against the Colts with a head injury.

Foles shined in relief against Indianapolis, posting the highest passer rating by a Kansas City quarterback in two years. He helped guide the team to a 30-15 victory over its AFC rival.

The move appears to be a precautionary one. According to head coach Andy Reid, Smith has no lingering symptoms from the pair of head-slamming hits suffered against the Colts. Instead, the Chiefs will err on the side of caution with their veteran passer for Sunday’s home game against 2-5 Jacksonville.

Reid was staid in his assertion Smith would remain the team’s starting quarterback as long as he was healthy. He also noted Smith passed concussion protocol tests each time he had to be helped off the field by the team’s training staff. Despite the relatively clean bill of health, he’ll take the week to recover while Foles attempts to reclaim the magic that made him a Pro Bowl quarterback in 2013.
