2016 NFL mock draft: Joshua Garnett headed to New Orleans Saints

Arguably the draft's best pure guard is the selection in the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft.

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

Choosing between needs in the NFL Draft is a challenge. WHen you have multiple pressing needs, you'll ultimately sacrifice one to fill another. That's the conundrum Dave Cariello of Canal Street Chronicles faced with his second round pick in the SB Nation NFL writers mock draft. He scored in the first round with Alabama defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson. That's one need checked off. Which one does he take care of now?

44. Saints: Joshua Garnett, G, Stanford

Cariello: The Saints really have no business drafting an offensive player considering their defense has been so terrible for the last decade and this year’s draft is chock full of defensive talent. Su’a Cravens and Shilique Calhoun both got a hard look for this pick, but there’s one position on the offensive side of the ball that definitely needs to be addressed, and that’s guard. With perennial Pro-Bowler Jahri Evans gone and no quality depth left behind, there are two gaping holes to fill on the interior. With arguably the best guard of the entire draft class still available and so few worthwhile draft options at the position this year, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. After all, if the team is hoping to squeeze another few years out of Drew Brees’ career, they’re going to want to keep him upright.

Analysis: This is the quandary for the Saints. Cornerback would be the ideal choice, but the top ones available are Artie Burns of Miami and Will Redmond of Mississippi State. A strong argument could be made for Burns, but his value is similar to Garnett's at No. 44. You can feel good about Garnett because he should be able to step right into New Orleans' starting lineup because he's already physical enough for the NFL and plays with good technique. From that standpoint, the pick makes complete sense. But avoiding a cornerback in the first two rounds means it will become critical to find a starter in the third round or later, a tough task.
