There will be no deal by July 15 for Kirk Cousins. Washington's quarterback is going to play out the season on the franchise tag, a move that makes sense if you think about it. Stephen White and I talked on this week's podcast about why Washington is probably smart not to give him a long-term deal just yet.
Oh, hey, you can subscribe to our neat little NFL podcast on iTunes.
NO DEAL FOR ALSHON: The Bears and Alshon Jeffery can't agree on a long-term deal. The Bears No. 1 wide receiver wants to be paid like a No. 1 wide receiver. The Bears have concerns about his ability to stay on the field. Chicago would be smart not to overthink this one. No. 1 receivers aren't exactly easy to find.
FRANCHISE TAG UPDATES: Where things stand with the NFL’s franchise tagged players for 2016. Teams have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal with franchised players.
IS THE DRAFT COMING TO PHILLY? The 2017 NFL Draft might be headed to Philadelphia. Philly.com is reporting that one of the city's reps in the U.S House, Bob Brady, said that the NFL Draft will be held in the City of Brotherly Love this year. An NFL spokesperson said that the NFL hasn't agreed on any deals with any city to host next year's draft year. The Philly mayor's office said the same thing.
DOLPHINS STADIUM WILL BE READY EVENTUALLY: Dolphins reiterate stadium will be ready for start of season despite reports. Circle Sept. 1 on the calendar. That's when the Dolphins are scheduled to play their first home game, Week 4 of the preseason, in the renovated stadium. That runs counter to a report that the building won't be ready until November.
SHADY INVESTIGATION DROPPED: LeSean McCoy bar fight investigation finally dismissed. It’s finally over after five months.
MEGATRON INTERVIEW: Calvin Johnson joins chorus of ex-players with accusations of painkiller misuse in NFL. The former Lions wide receiver says painkillers were readily available to players with addictions. Pride of Detroit has more on the Megatron interview.
IS ELWAY THE PROBLEM? Does John Elway drive players away? I'm starting to wonder. His hardline stance on contract negotiations has cost the Broncos some talent already, but we'll see how things play out with Von Miller before judging too harshly.
VEGAS RAIDERS TALK: New Las Vegas site emerges as leader for potential Raiders stadium. The Fertitta Brothers, owners of Station Casinos, have offered up some acreage near the Strip on their Wild Wild West property for a potential stadium location.
