The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets will kick off their 2016 season when they face each other on Sunday afternoon. Cincinnati will once again be expected to compete for a playoff spot, but the Bengals have not yet shed the choker label after early playoff exits in recent years. New York, on the other hand, competes in a very tough division and has struggled to even make the playoffs.
The Jets came close last year, outperforming expectations and finishing the season with a 10-6 record. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, a career journeyman, played great football all year and spent the offseason refusing to sign a contract until he was offered enough money. Eventually, the two sides came together on a new deal and the Jets are hoping it wasn't just a one-off good season from the veteran quarterback.
Cincinnati made the playoffs last season, but is 0-7 in the postseason under Marvin Lewis. The Bengals led the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final minutes of a playoff game last season, but they fumbled it away and allowed the Steelers to take the win. That was the last real NFL game the Bengals played. They'll be hoping Sunday's opener against the Jets goes better.
Experts at CBS Sports are favoring the Bengals for the game, with five of the eight picking Cincinnati. Of the nine experts who picked from ESPN, seven of them are going with Cincinnati to win. At FOX Sports, all five of their experts also think the Bengals will win.
Here at SB Nation, three of the nine experts picking think the Jets will win. The other six, plus the OddsShark Computer, think the Bengals will win.
