There aren’t many positions, if any, that require more athleticism and explosion than wide receiver. And at the 2017 NFL Combine, receivers will have the chance to put their abilities on display.
Washington’s John Ross is in the first-round conversation, but he made the biggest news of the combine when he ran an official 4.22 40-yard dash, which broke Chris Johnson’s longstanding record.
The combine is a big opportunity for a class that doesn’t feature a clear-cut No. 1 prospect. Western Michigan’s Corey Davis and Clemson’s Mike Williams are battling to be the first receiver off the board, although Ross may have pushed himself into the conversation, and there’s still plenty of time and chances for others to show they are worth taking in the first round.
Kermit Whitfield of Florida State won’t be one of those players after a mostly unproductive college career, but the track star promises to shine in Indianapolis. He has blazing speed and could post one of the fastest 40 times of the year.
Wide receivers began testing Friday with the bench press and will hit the field for timing drills Saturday. Billy Brown of Division II’s Shepherd University led the pack in the bench press with 23 reps.
Ross also exploded with an 133-inch broad jump and Speedy Noil had a 43.5-inch vertical.
