The Steelers picked Virginia Tech safety Terrell Edmunds with the 28th overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday. Injured linebacker Ryan Shazier appeared at the draft site in North Texas and walked onstage to announce the pick after an introduction from Roger Goodell.
Shazier walked onto the draft stage with the help of his fiancee, Michelle. He suffered a horrifying spinal injury during a Monday Night Football game against the Bengals in December and spent some time confined to a wheelchair. In recent weeks, he’s appeared at a handful of events, including NCAA tournament basketball games and hockey games in Pittsburgh. He was an honorary captain at Ohio State’s spring game earlier in March, too.
The Steelers have already announced that Shazier won’t play in 2018. They’ve said he’ll remain part of the organization, as he did during the latter weeks of the regular season and playoff run in 2017.
