The preseason games are all complete, and now NFL teams have trimmed their rosters down to 53 players before Saturday’s deadline.
After four weeks of exhibition games the evaluation time is done, and roster battles will be decided. But getting cut doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the road for roster hopefuls, who will be waived and can potentially be claimed by other teams by 12 p.m. on Sunday.
We’ve had a few surprising cuts, especially at the wide receiver position. One of the biggest was the Bills releasing Corey Coleman. Buffalo traded for the wide receiver earlier in the offseason, but the team didn’t give much to get him — a seventh-round pick and cash. The Browns drafted Coleman with the 15th overall pick in 2016. Injuries have stunted his career; he’s only played 18 games.
Though more expected, the Ravens cut ties with one of their former first-round wide receivers: Breshad Perriman. With Martavis Bryant facing another drug suspension, the Raiders released him despite trading for Bryant just over four months ago.
The Colts cut productive defensive end John Simon, the Steelers are moving on from backup quarterback Landry Jones, the Cowboys released longtime kicker Dan Bailey, and the Texans did the same to their veteran punter, Shane Lechler.
Fans of Hard Knocks (spoiler alert) might be miffed to see some of their favorites, including Devon Cajuste, Carl Nassib, and Nate Orchard, get the ax.
After players were claimed off waivers Sunday, others found themselves without a job for now, including quarterbacks Paxton Lynch, Cardale Jones, and Davis Webb. Others who were cut on Saturday found new homes, like Kevin Hogan (to the Broncos) and WR Tanner McEvoy (to the Dolphins).
Others on the bubble kept their spots on the roster, including quarterback Robert Griffin III with the Ravens, running back Ameer Abdullah of the Lions, and cornerback Jason McCourty with the Patriots.
We also got a few trades, most notably the Raiders sending Khalil Mack to the Bears and then trading for backup QB AJ McCarron.
After the waiver period expires on Sunday, teams can establish a practice squad of up to 10 players from the group that was cut, provided they meet certain eligibility requirements. We’re tracking those signings here.
More cuts could be coming as teams sign players either hit the waiver wire or are free agents. We’ll keep track of the NFL cuts here as they are announced.
