This 2011 NHL All-Star Weekend obviously has a Carolina feel to it, so it was fitting when hometown captain Eric Staal's team won the "puck toss" to earn the first overall pick in Friday's All-Star Fantasy Draft. Sticking with the theme, of course, Staal took another hometown favorite with the first overall pick -- "his boy" Cam Ward.
That "my boy" thing would be a theme for the first several picks of this draft. With the second pick, Team Nicklas Lidstrom stepped up to the podium and selected Tampa's Steven Stamkos. Stamkos joined his boy Martin St. Louis, Lidstrom's alternate captain.
With the third pick, Mike Green, an alternate captain on Team Staal stepped to the mic to take his boy, Alex Ovechkin. Then, with the fourth pick, Patrick Kane of Team Lidstrom stepped up and took his boy, Chicago teammate Duncan Keith. Jonathan Toews wasn't happy.
Yes, they all actually said "my boy" before each pick.
Continuing with the theme, Ryan Kesler of the Vancouver Canucks and Team Staal stepped up to select his teammate, Daniel Sedin. But that's where all that ended.
With the sixth pick, Daniel and his brother, Henrik Sedin, were finally separated. Daniel was taken by Team Staal, and as a result, Sunday will be the first time the two play against each other in the NHL.
