San Jose Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher in the first period of Tuesday's game after he was hit into the boards from behind by Maxim Lapierre.
Lapierre was given a five-minute major for checking from behind, a game misconduct, and a five-minute major for fighting in the line brawl that followed the hit.
Given that Lapierre has a history of questionable plays and suspensions, combined with the fact there was a serious injury on the play, you can be sure that Brendan Shanahan and the league's disciplinary committee is going to be getting in touch with him in the coming days.
Update: The Sharks say that Boyle was alert after being taken to the hospital.
From #JSharks spokesman: "Dan was alert and moving his extremities and has been taken to a local hospital for evaluation."— David Pollak (@PollakOnSharks) October 16, 2013
