Michael Grabner suspension: 2 games for hit on Nathan Gerbe

Michael Grabner of the New York Islanders has been suspended two games for hitting Nathan Gerbe of the Carolina Hurricanes with an illegal check to the head.

It was a busy day for NHL discipline on  Monday as the league not only hit Cody McLeod with a five-game banishmentfor boarding Niklas Kronwall, it also suspended New York Islanders forward Michael Grabner for an illegal hit to the head of Carolina Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe.

Grabner was not penalized for the hit that occurred early in the first period of Saturday's game.

He will lose $30,769.24 as a result of the suspension. He will be eligible to return to the Islanders lineup on Saturday, Oct. 26 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Here is a look at the play, as well as the league's explanation for the suspension.

Grabner has been off to a strong start for the Islanders this season, scoring two goals to go with six assists in eight games.
