Evgeni Malkin skates circles around Ducks

New, comment

Evgeni Malkin went for a skate around the Anaheim defense on Monday night. The Ducks enjoyed watching.

The Penguins offense has been in a funk the past couple of weeks, and it seemed to reach its low point when they opened the first period of their game on Monday by going 18 minutes without a shot on goal.

That's not good.

The only saving grace for the Penguins is that they didn't allow Anaheim to create many quality chances either and were still in a scoreless tie entering the third period. And that is when the floodgates opened a little.

Brian Gibbons, just called up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League earlier in the day, scored his first NHL goal off of a pretty incredible feed from Evgeni Malkin. It was pretty much a one-man offensive zone cycle by Malkin as he skated a circle the entire way around the Ducks defense, drawing the attention of just about every Anaheim defender, leaving Gibbons all alone in the slot for the shot.

Malkin is in the middle of one of the worst goal-scoring droughts of his career, but he's still playing quality hockey and helping out as a playmaker. This was one of the finest plays he's made all season.
