Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland earned an ejection and possible suspension Saturday for an illegal hit to the head penalty on Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader.
The incident occurred late in the first period. As Abdelkader was watching the play, Engelland stepped up and drilled his shoulder into Abdelkader's jaw.
As you might expect, Engelland was immediately assessed a match penalty and a 10-minute misconduct for an illegal check to the head.
The league is certainly going to look at this hit. Considering he was suspended previously for three games in 2011 for a similar hit on Marcus Kruger, it's safe to expect Engelland will be punished harshly by the NHL Department of Player Safety.
