One of these days NHL players are going to get the message about hitting their opponents from behind. One of these days they are going to figure it out. As Kyle Quincey of the Detroit Red Wings demonstrated in the first period against Anaheim, Tuesday is not going to be that day.
Quincey was ejected and given a five-minute major for boarding Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf in the first period.
Getzlaf, who entered the game on a 14-game point streak, had to leave the game with a cut near his mouth and a lot of blood on his face.
The power play was short-lived thanks to a Dustin Penner high-sticking penalty just a couple of minutes later, but the Ducks were still able to add two more goals to take a 4-1 lead into the first intermission.
