Stephen Weiss injury: Red Wings forward out 6-8 weeks

New, comment

Stephen Weiss will miss 6-8 weeks while recovering from a sports hernia injury.

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Spor

The Detroit Red Wings received a bit of good news on Monday afternoon as forward Stephen Weiss underwent successful surgery on a sports hernia. Unfortunately, it comes with a bit of bad news, as Weiss is expected to miss six to eight weeks while recovering.

The injury was sustained sometime in November and forced Weiss to miss six games. He went on to miss five more games in December with what was believed to be a groin issue. Ansar Kahn of reported that Weiss visited with a specialist in Philadelphia on Friday where he was advised to undergo surgery to fix the issue. The Red Wings and Weiss ultimately decided that was the best course of action.

Weiss is projected to return sometime after the Olympic break in February.

Signed as an unrestricted free agent this offseason, Weiss was expected to be a key contributor to the Red Wings. That hasn't been the case, as he has struggled with only four points (two goals, two assists) in 26 games played.
