A busy weekend for Brendan Shanahan and the NHL Department of Player Safety was capped off when Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf hit Boston Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller late in the third period of Sunday night's game.
While no penalty was called on the play, Player Safety has requested a phone hearing with Phaneuf that will take place on Tuesday. The Department is considering supplemental discipline under the terms of boarding.
The incident occurred at the 17:39 mark of the third period when Miller was attempting to retrieve a puck in the Bruins defensive zone. Phaneuf connected on the hit, which resulted in Miller immediately leaving the ice.
Phaneuf has no suspension history since the inception of the Department of Player Safety.
He completes a hat trick of hearings for the group, as Pittsburgh Penguins forward James Neal will have a phone hearing on Monday and Bruins forward Shawn Thornton will have an in-person hearing at a later date. The latter incidents occurred in a chaotic night in Boston, where Loui Ericsson sustained a concussion after a hit from Brooks Orpik, Brad Marchand was hit in the head by Neal and Orpik was attacked by Thornton.
