Canucks vs. Blackhawks: Four breakaways in first period

Apparently these two highly-skilled teams decided to hold an impromptu shootout in the opening period.

Marian Hossa, Dave Bolland, Patrick Sharp, and Daniel Sedin all had breakaways in an exciting, if a bit sloppy, first period of hockey on Tuesday night, but no goals were scored thanks to solid play from Chicago goaltender Ray Emery, starting in goal as Corey Crawford takes the night off, and Vancouver's Cory Schneider, starting in goal because he is maybe, possibly, the team's number one goalie? It's complicated.

This is a huge game for the Blackhawks, who are looking to tie the 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks as the only teams in NHL history to go 16 games to start a season without a regulation loss.

These two teams have developed a bitter rivalry over the past few seasons, stemming from several tense playoff battles. The first period of action also featured a fight between Brandon Bollig and Dale Weise.

The period would end with the Canucks up 1-0 on a bad-angle shot from Daniel Sedin. Vancouver led in shots in the period 12-9.
