The NHL has suspended Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine three games for his elbow to the face of Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds.

In his explanation, Brendan Shanahan cited Simmonds' head injury and the "reckless" nature of the elbow from Erskine. The league also took into consideration Erskine's history. He's never been suspended before.

Erskine will miss Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Tuesday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Thursday's rematch in Pittsburgh. He'll be eligible to return Sat., Feb. 9 against the Florida Panthers. Simmonds, meanwhile, will be further evaluated by doctors on Sunday. He's out of the lineup for Philadelphia's game against Carolina on Saturday evening.

Erskine will forfeit $24,324.33 in salary.
