The New York Rangers continued their barrage of shots on the Washington Capitals in the second period of Game 4, but Capitals goalie Braden Holtby stood up to the task and allowed the Capitals to tie the game 2-2.
The Rangers' only goal on 13 second-period shots came from a blistering top-corner shot by Carl Hagelin, who gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead:
But the Capitals got one back after a nice entry with speed by Joel Ward, who took advantage of Michael Del Zotto's sad slide.
Ward took the puck below the goal line before curling back in front to try to stuff it by Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist stopped Ward's shot, but Mathieu Perreault, who had skated 190 feet from behind his own net on the rush, arrived at Lundqvist's doorstep in time to slam the rebound in:
Later, just when it looked like the Rangers would, if not beat Holtby again, at least carry a lead into the third period, Troy Brouwer tied it up with 17.1 seconds to go in the period.
The Rangers outshot the Capitals through two periods by a two-to-one margin, 26-13, yet it was anyone's game heading into the third.
Meanwhile, the Capitals are without important forward Martin Erat, whose wrist after a collision with Alex Ovechkin and Martin Erat was, well let's just say it did not look good.
