Restricted free agent forward Sam Gagner has come to terms on a contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers, according to multiple reports on Monday morning. Gagner had played out a one-year, $3.2 million contract in 2013, according to CapGeek.com.
The two sides came to terms on a three-year, $14.4 million contract that carries an annual average value of $4.8 million against the salary cap. The two sides were minutes away from appearing before an arbitrator. According to previous accounts, Gagner would have requested a $5.5 million annual average salary in the event that an arbitration hearing became necessary. Edmonton would have asked for $3.5 million.
Those figures are no longer relevant given the new extension.
Gagner's deal includes a no-movement clause, according to Ryan Rishaug of TSN. The clause will kick-in after the 2013-14 season, as it would have been Gagner's first year of eligibility for unrestricted free agency.
Despite playing in 414 career regular season games, Gagner is only 23-years-old, as he made the Oilers roster in 2007 after being taken with the No. 6 overall selection in the NHL Draft of that year. Over that span, the forward has accumulated 258 points (91 goals and 167 assists), 203 penalty minutes and an average ice time of 17:01.
In 48 games in 2013, Gagner recorded 38 points (14 goals and 24 assists), which was the second most on the Oilers behind only Taylor Hall.
