For most of the first two periods it seemed as if the Winter Classic was destined to be scoreless until a shootout.
Late in the second period, the two teams finally found a way to break through the snow and find the back of the net. After Daniel Alfredsson gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead with his skate, Toronto's James van Riemsdyk scored the equalizer when he batted the puck out of mid-air past Jimmy Howard.
