NHL schedule 2014: Penguins host Islanders in Metro Division battle

Pittsburgh and New York are tops in the division and open a home-and-home set on Friday. Elsewhere, Boston visits Columbus and the Devils meet the Oilers.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

It's a light Friday night in the NHL and it was made even lighter due to heavy snow in the Buffalo area.

The lake effect snowstorm that's brought more than seven feet of snow to part of Buffalo caused the NHL to postpone the game between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers. A date hasn't been set to reschedule the game,

As for games that will happen, the highlight of the night is in Pittsburgh where the Penguins host the New York Islanders at 7 p.m. ET. This will be the first game of a back-to-back home-and-home set between these teams and if that feels like a setup for the playoffs, there's good reason to buy into it.

The Penguins lead the Islanders by three points in the Metropolitan Division and with that kind of start, the Isles are feeling a bit more confident. Having a healthy John Tavares makes a big difference there, but going up against Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin has never been a great thing for the Isles. These two have met once this season with Pittsburgh coming out on top 3-1.

Elsewhere, the Boston Bruins head to Columbus to meet the Blue Jackets at 7 p.m.  who are looking to get back to winning. Columbus has the league's second-worst record but had won two in a row before being humbled by the Detroit Red Wings 5-0 on Tuesday.

The Bruins, meanwhile, have found a groove winning their past two games and seven of the past nine. One thing that could use work is the offense as they've scored six goals in the past four games.

A pair of slumping teams meet in Edmonton as the Devils face the Oilers at 9:30 p.m. New Jersey has lost six of the past eight and Edmonton has dropped eight of the past 10 games. Something has to give... Right?

Here's the schedule for Friday. All games can be seen on GameCenter Live and Center Ice.
