In Canada's quarterfinal matchup with Latvia, an awkward hit along the boards hobbled New York Islanders superstar John Tavares. He'll miss the remainder of the Olympics with the subsequent injury, the team announced.
Tavares was attempting to sneak by along the boards with the puck, but Arturs Kulda caught him, and as Tavares slipped most of his body through the check, his left leg is pinned behind him and along the boards, with pressure applied to the knee.
Tavares grabbed at his knee as he laid on the ice, though he skated off to the bench under his own power. Tavares remained on the bench for a little while, but eventually left to go back to the locker room and did not return in the second period.
