Florida Panthers trade rumors: Brad Boyes, Mike Weaver on the block

Florida hopes to re-sign Boyes after they trade him this week.

The long-anticipated Florida Panthers fire sale might finally get started this week, as reports indicate that winger Brad Boyes and defenseman Mike Weaver will both be available at the trade deadline on Wednesday.

The Panthers traded Kris Versteeg earlier this season but have been quiet ever since. Now the Sun Sentinel reported on Saturday that the Panthers are willing to trade Boyes this week before trying to sign him again when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

Weaver, also an impending free agent, is available in exchange for a "decent draft pick."

Re-signing Boyes after trading him sounds like a nice idea, but in reality it might be too lofty a goal. The 31-year-old winger would be an attractive piece to a playoff team. At his age and with no Stanley Cups on his mantle there's a good chance the former 30-goal-scorer re-signs with whichever contending team he gets traded to.

The same goes for Weaver, although at 35 years old, the market for his services might be a little weaker. Either way, Florida seems primed to start shipping off assets this week as they continue to rebuild their franchise.
