Douglas Murray is probably going to be hearing from Brendan Shanahan and the NHL's department of player safety at some point in the next 24 hours. That's assuming he doesn't already have a voicemail message on his phone.
The Montreal Canadiens' defenseman was assessed a match penalty in the third period of their 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday for delivering this absolutely brutal elbow to the head of Mike Kostka.
Kostka was obviously injured on the play, but was somehow able to skate off the ice with the assistance of some teammates.
Not only was it a disgusting hit, it was also incredibly stupid as it came with the Canadiens down by a goal while they were attempting to tie the game. Tampa Bay scored on the ensuing power play to put the game out of reach and clinch a playoff spot for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
Now the question becomes how many games Murray has to sit.
