Justin Abdelkader close to 7-year contract extension with Red Wings, per report

If true, this would be a huge deal for the 28-year-old.

Justin Abdelkader might be getting a big payday soon. TSN's Bob McKenzie is reporting on Wednesday night that the 28-year-old forward is looking at a massive contract extension, a seven-year deal with an average value of over $4 million.

Gut reaction says this may be an overreach on years for the serviceable forward, as Abdelkader will be 35 in the last year of the deal. Abdelkader is as solid as they come for Detroit, however, and locking up a big piece of the offense for any chunk of money will have to come with a long-term deal for security purposes.

Abdelkader had a career high year last season, putting up 44 points in 71 games, a huge increase on his 28 from the 2013-14 season. The forward currently has seven points for the Red Wings in 15 games.
