Bruins winger Chris Kelly trips and fractures his femur

He did not leave the game under his own power.

The Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars had barely enough time to settle into their game on Tuesday before a gruesome injury brought the game to a halt.

Just a few minutes into the first period, Bruins winger Chris Kelly jumped Stars winger Colton Sceviour and stole the puck right in front of the Dallas bench. But then something odd happened. Kelly either skated into a rut, lost his balance or just plain slipped because he fell awkwardly on his back.

Unfortunately, his left knee buckled underneath him. The following GIF is not for the squeamish. You've been warned.

Kelly laid flat on the ice (attended to by trainers) for so long you started to wonder if he hurt more than just his leg. But when he finally rose, it was clear: he was guided to the locker room with his arms around two trainers, putting no weight on his left leg.

He didn't return to the game, and the Bruins later updated the media with the horrible news.
