Radko Gudas suspended three games for headshot on Mika Zibanejad

This is the first suspension for the Flyers defenseman.

The NHL Department of Player Safety acted swiftly on Wednesday, hangind Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas a three-game suspension for an illegal check to the head.

The incident occurred early in the third period between the Flyers and Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night. Senators winger Mika Zibanejad received a faceoff win from a teammate when Gudas stepped up and delivered a high hit that leveled the Senators winger.

Zibanejad left the game and didn't return. While he was feeling better on Wednesday, his coach listed him as doubtful for the Senators' game on Thursday.

Somehow no penalty was called on the play. That probably factored into the league's decision to ban Gudas for three games, including the fact he clearly targeted Zibanejad's head on the hit. Gudas, known around the league for delicately toeing the line with physical play, has never been fined or suspended before.

The Flyers won the game, 4-2. Here's the full suspension video from the NHL:
