Islanders vs. Capitals 2015 final score, NHL playoffs: Washington wins Game 7 to advance

A late goal sent the Capitals to the second round.

The Washington Capitals stayed on attack Monday night in Game 7 against the New York Islanders and eventually the effort paid off. Washington took more than twice as many shots as the Islanders, with Evgeny Kuznetsov finding the back of the net late in the third period for the decisive goal.

Washington came out shooting early but Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak was up to the task, stopping 11 shots in the first period. He kept a clean sheet well into the second period, despite the Capitals continuing to put shots on goal. Washington finally broke through late in the second period when Joel Ward scored his first goal of the series.

Despite only firing off 11 shots all game, the Islanders tied it early in the third period when Frans Nielsen scored to make it 1-1. The contest remained tied for nearly 10 minutes before Kuznetsov scored the eventual game-winner. There were some tight moments down the stretch, including a late Islander power play opportunity. New York failed to come through, however, as its power play issues continued. The Islanders finished 0-for-14 on the power play in the series.

The Capitals advance to the second round where they will face the New York Rangers.
