Nikita Kucherov scored 2:06 into double overtime, leading the Tampa Bay Lightning over the Monteral Canadiens 2-1 in Game 1 of their second-round NHL playoff series on Friday night at Centre Bell in Montreal. Tampa Bay leads the best-of-seven series, 1-0.
This is just the fourth time the Lightning have reached the second round in their 23-year franchise history. Tampa Bay held home ice advantage in the first round last year against the Canadiens but were swept in four games. They looked to return the favor in Game 1, and almost did so in regulation.
Tyler Johnson -- who scored six goals in seven games in the Lightning's opening-round win over the Detroit Red Wings -- scored 2:34 into the third period on Friday night to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. With 5:13 remaining, Max Pacioretty scored for Montreal to tie the game. It's his third goal of the playoffs.
This was the first overtime game of the second round of this year's playoffs, after 10 of 47 games went into overtime in the first round.
Ben Bishop saved 43 of 44 shots for the win.
Game 2 is on Sunday evening at Bell Centre in Montreal at 6 p.m. ET, televised by NBCSN.
