I’m not sure Jake Guentzel ever believed he would one day be compared with Mario Lemieux when he first started playing hockey. Well, the Penguins rookie has put himself in with that unique company after scoring on his first shot of this first NHL shift.

A simple shot from the left circle now has Guentzel sitting with the likes of Lemieux and, more recently, Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
It’s a pretty rare sight. And you know who can’t believe it either? His family!

Then, 12 minutes later, Guentzel added his second goal to an already historic evening!

His family, of course, was over the moon.

His brother, Ryan, even cracked a joke on Twitter after the momentous occasion!

What a whirlwind of a day it’s been for Guentzel, who was just called up as an injury replacement the morning of the game!
