The Vegas Golden Knights are the NHL’s newest expansion team

After months of waiting and posturing, Las Vegas hockey has a name. The NHL announced on Tuesday evening that the 31st team in the league will be called the Vegas Golden Knights.

Commissioner Gary Bettman, Las Vegas franchise owner Bill Foley, and other team representatives revealed the name and logo outside of T-Mobile Arena, which the Golden Knights will call home. The name Golden Knights lines up with the rumors floating around for the past few months. Las Vegas is owned by Foley’s company, Black Knight Sports & Entertainment, so a riff on that was almost assured from Day 1.

We also got our first good look at the logo proper at the announcement party. Inlaid on a black shield with a golden border is a knight’s helmet, with a opening resembling the letter V.

The logo and name leaked just over three hours before the announcement, when a Twitter user posted a picture of what looked to be a baseball cap with the official logo. The tweet was deleted about a half hour later.

And if you’re wondering about that secondary logo, it’s actually a pretty neat homage to an iconic Las Vegas landmark.
