Flyers and Bruins goalies trade ridiculous saves during excellent shootout finish

Who needs Connor McDavid when you have these guys?

The highlight of hockey on Tuesday was supposed to be the Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid versus the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews. Instead, the two goalies in the game preceding that matchup kept them off the channel with some spectacular saves.

The Bruins and Flyers battled to overtime and traded some truly sensational scoring chances. At first, it seemed as though David Pastrnak would finish with the best of them, but then Claude Giroux simply got robbed by Tuukka Rask with six seconds left in overtime.

We’ve watched that shot at least 10 times, and we’re still not sure exactly how Rask deflected that puck with a centimeter of his stick shaft. We’re going to go with magic. Yes. Magic.

Giroux’s baffled reaction was priceless. After all, he was wound up for that shot for the better part of a decade.

But his Flyers got the last laugh, thanks to an equally impressive save from Steve Mason in the shootout, which lasted a quadrillion rounds. And it was fitting that the victim was Pastrnak, easily the best player in the late stages.

Shayne Gostisbehere ended it soon thereafter with a goal and another Mason save. NBCSN didn’t bank on Flyers-Bruins, but it got its money’s worth. What a game.
