John Tavares beats defender with stick behind his back and scores

New, comment

The rare behind-the-back goal!

Of most of the NHL’s recent former first overall picks, John Tavares might be the most unassuming.

The New York Islanders captain is terrific, but not always flashy about it. But that’s OK, because he met his super flashy goal quota for the year on Thursday against the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues and Islanders were knotted up at 1-1 midway through the first period when Tavares tried to beat a defender to a puck. He didn’t stop there; with his arm being held, he simply maneuvered his stick behind his back and scored anyway.

Ridiculous. That’s Tavares’ eighth goal of the season, but by far the best goal the Islanders have scored this year.
