College hockey's biggest month is here. For the next three weeks, the NCAA's best will compete for a chance at hoisting the championship trophy at Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay. But first, they have to get picked by the selection committee as one of the 16 teams invited to play in this tournament.
We know many of the usual suspects will be there: Boston College, Boston University, North Dakota, last year's champions from Providence, plus red hot Michigan and overall No. 1 seed seeker Quinnipiac. Many bubble teams like Yale and Minnesota Duluth are still in limbo after conference championship weekend, but the wait is almost over.
Selection Sunday is at hand. I'll let the NCAA's official website take it away on the specifics of the selection process:
Of the 16 teams, 6 conference champions will receive automatic qualification with the remaining best 10 teams being selected on an at-large basis. A total of 4 teams will be seeded with each of the seeded teams being placed at 1 regional site...
At each site, 4 teams will compete in single-elimination Regional Semifinal competition. The 2 winning teams will then compete against each other in single-elimination Regional Final competition at the same site. The winning team from each of the 4 Regionals will advance to the Frozen Four in Tampa Bay, Fla.
Simple, right? Here's how to watch the selection show for this year's NCAA hockey tournament:
