The Arizona Coyotes made another huge splash ahead of the NHL entry draft on Friday, acquiring top New York Rangers center Derek Stepan in a blockbuster trade.

Arizona also acquired goalie Antti Raanta, while sending the seventh overall pick in the draft and defenseman Anthony DeAngelo to the Rangers.

TSN reporter Darren Dreger was the first to break the story.

Stepan is coming off a 55-point campaign and a six-point playoff run with the Rangers. He has 360 points in 515 career games with New York and has served as the alternate captain for a few years now. Raanta was New York’s backup goalie and served that role quite well, going 16-8-2 with a 2.26 GAA and a .922 SV% this year.

Arizona needed another goalie after trading Mike Smith to the Flames last week for Chad Johnson.

The Rangers now have the seventh and 21st overall picks in Friday’s first round.
