Will it be the NHL or Europe for the longtime veteran?

We are two weeks away from officially knowing the fate of Jaromir Jagr. For the past few months, the 45-year-old veteran has been without an NHL team. Now that the league’s offseason has come to a close, it’s apparently time for Jagr to choose.

According to KHL insider Aivis Kalnins, Jagr’s agent has confirmed that he will announce his team on Oct. 5.

There are a few factors as to why Jagr has yet to find an NHL team. While he can still produce just fine at this level, his asking price on a one-year deal may by too high for some teams. Of course, Jagr is a future Hall of Famer and it’s quite incredible none of the remaining 30 NHL teams wanted to take a flyer on him.

Jagr has since spoken out about his plans should the NHL fall through. In mid-August, Jagr said he has considered a return to the Czech Republic, where he would play for Kladno, a hockey club he owns. Playing in the Czech Republic would give Jagr freedom to cancel his contract should an NHL team come knocking, and it would allow him to play in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Earlier this week, Jagr said he will not sign a tryout with a team and that the KHL is also a possible landing spot for him.

The 2017-18 NHL season officially begins on Oct. 4, with Jagr’s announcement to come the following day. It’s hard not to read into those dates, but Jagr can still sign with an NHL team as an unrestricted free agent even after the new season has started.

Even still, with no real positive news on the NHL front, it may be time to accept that Jagr could move on from the league. In any case, we’re finally going to get answers within the next two weeks one way or another.
