USA World Cup 2014 betting odds preview, Group G predictions

The Americans face a deadly group stage and are long shots to advance in World Cup 2014. Can Team USA buck the odds and advance against Germany, Portugal and Ghana?

The USA has one of their deeper World Cup teams but, not only have they been drawn into the Group of Death, they have not looked good in recent friendlies.

On top of being in a killer group, they will be facing Ghana in group play, which is a team that has eliminated the Americans from the last two World Cup tournaments.

The squad has a good midfield, but their attack is not a great one and they have had issues defending set pieces. The controversy around Landon Donovan's omission from the team has been a distraction.

USA Odds to win World Cup 2014: 2250
USA Odds to win Group G: +1100

USA is in Group D along with Germany, Portugal, and Ghana and they have the third best odds to win the group.

In their last three World Cup tune-ups, they beat South Korea and played to a draw with Mexico on American solid and then looked far from solid in a 2-0 loss to Ukraine, played in Cypress.

Their key striker in Jozy Altidore has not been a factor in the last few matches and he has to be in top form this summer for the Americans to advance out of the Group of Death.

World Cup Prediction for USA

The third time is the charm for USA, as they will get their revenge against Ghana and beat them in their World Cup opener.

Facing Portugal next they may play a good match with their solid midfield play, but they will not score and they will not take three points away from the match.

Against Germany, they can potentially lose badly. While they may have the same amount of points as Portugal, they will not have a better goal differential and they will not advance out of the group stage.

How USA got to the World Cup

The Americans did not start off solid in the World Cup qualification process with one win, one draw, and one draw in their first three matches. However, they won six of their last seven matches including their last three.

They did finish first in CONCACAF "Hex" qualifying with 22 points, but they struggled on the road. In their away matches, facing other squads playing this summer such as Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica, they lost twice and played to one draw.
