The Pittsburgh Penguins announced today that Evgeni Malkin will need six months of rehab after he goes under the knife on Thursday. The star forward will have surgery to repair the torn MCL and the torn ACL in his right knee.

The official announcement from the team says that he'll be ready for training camp next season.

Malkin suffered the injury on Friday against Buffalo when he went hard into the boards with Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers. Since that injury, the Penguins have lost two straight games, in contrast to another recent stretch without Malkin where the team won nine of ten.

Just so we're on the same page, this isn't necessarily new news. We knew the day after the injury that Malkin was going to need surgery. Now, we know the particulars of that surgery.

When Penguins coach Dan Bylsma was asked on Sunday before the Penguins and Capitals game whether he had any updates on the status of Evgeni Malkin, he didn't really have one ... but he does expect Malkin to be out for the rest of the season. That diagnosis was expected after it was reported that Malkin tore his ACL and MCL on Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres.

"It’s a serious injury at this point," Bylsma told reporters before the game against Washington. "Surgery would be in that category. Even rehab, I’m not sure what the prognosis would be with that. I don’t know if he’s talked to the doctors about what the options are at this point.

The Penguins have called up Tim Wallace from the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins to replace Malkin. Wallace has 15 goals and 28 points for the baby Penguins this season and led the team last season with 27 goals.

The Penguins will have the chance to replace Malkin at the trade deadline as well. The Penguins will have Malkin's cap space to work with and a handful of weeks to find a rental center or forward to plug into the lineup. One of the lone bright spots for the Penguins is that they have been able to win without Malkin in the lineup; the team has nine wins in the 10 games that Malkin has missed this season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been without Evgeni Malkin in 10 games this season. In those games, the team has nine wins. So why will his absence from the Penguins' lineup for the rest of the season negatively impact the team?

Well, it's still Evgeni Malkin, and despite the team's success without him so far this season, it's hard to imagine that's a trend that continues through the final two and a half months of the season, plus playoffs, which Malkin will miss with a severe knee injury. Perhaps the Pens' biggest strength is their depth up the middle. Malkin is obviously a big part of that.

It's just the latest in a series of bad injuries for the Penguins. Sidney Crosby is still out indefinitely with a concussion and there's no timetable set for his return. Losing Malkin and Crosby long-term is just a devastating blow.

Then again, it's not all bad for the Pens. With Malkin out for the year, GM Ray Shero can place him on long-term injured reserve, which gives the team a cushion to exceed the salary cap by his $8.7 million cap hit.

Expect the Penguins to be busy at the trade deadline, which is just 23 days way. One thing on the LTIR cushion, though, is that when Malkin returns next season, they lose that space. That likely limits the Penguins to trading for a contract that expires at the end of the current season.

We might not know who the Pens will target at the deadline, but one thing is certain: You can't replace Evgeni Malkin.

One player already on the roster that will be asked to help will be Jordan Staal. Coach Dan Bylsma loves the guy and says that he kind of lurks in the shadows behind Malkin and Crosby at the center position. This injury will give him a much more prominent role as a scorer and if he blossoms, the impact of losing Malkin could shrink significantly.

Evgeni Malkin had missed five games and the NHL All-Star Game thanks to knee issues, and upon his return to the Penguins' lineup on Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres, it didn't take long for No. 71 to go down yet again. This time, it's the opposite knee.

On the opening shift of the second period, Malkin went into the corner with Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers. It looked as though he hit his knee against the boards after absorbing a hit from Myers. He collapsed to the ice and never returned to the game.

Evgeni Malkin returned to the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup on Friday night after missing five games and the NHL All-Star game, but now it looks like that return was a cameo. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma told reporters today that Malkin has both a torn MCL and ACL in his right knee. He most likely will need season-ending surgery.

"We're discussing options with our doctor," Bylsma said after practice. "Surgery is a possibility. I'm not sure if there is a rehab possibility. But right now I just got the news on the MRI."

Malkin ended up playing only six minutes in his brief return to action on Friday against Buffalo. He left the game for good early in the second period after the Sabres' Tyler Myers landed on his leg. The Penguins won the game,3-2 at Consol Engery Center, and had gone 4-1 without Malkin while he sat out with a sinus infection.

"It'd be great to convince ourselves [that the Penguins are better when Malkin isn't playing]," goalie Marc-Andre Fleury told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after the win on Friday. "But I don't think so."

Malkin has 15 goals and 22 assists this season in 43 games
